Puzzle #84 – A Word From Our Sponsors (and it’s a contest!)

In this meta-puzzle, you’re looking for something sponsored that could continue the theme.

It’s time for another contest! For the winner: a copy of my puzzlefest and plenty of bragging rights.

  1. First, solve this week’s crossword puzzle. (To keep you honest, I’m locking the Across Lite file, so it’s not going to tell you if you’re making mistakes or give you Mr. Happy Pencil when you’ve gotten everything right. Plus, the solution grid isn’t up yet, either. Fair warning!)
  2. Figure out the answer to the meta-puzzle (note the prompt in italics above) and email it to neville.fogarty@gmail.com. Please put your solution in the subject line of the email. You have until 6 AM ET on Thursday, February 27, 2014 (just before Community returns!) to submit your answer – and please: only one guess per person. If you’ve got the right answer, you’ll receive one entry in the random drawing to win.
  3. Keep your fingers crossed!

Update: The contest is now over. Thanks for playing!

That’s it! Remember that all correct answers submitted before the deadline are treated equally, so you don’t have to solve quickly. If your name is selected, I’ll send you an email on Thursday asking you for some details, so keep an eye out for that. I’ll announce the winner next Friday along with this puzzle’s solution and a new puzzle. And if you’re craving more contest crosswords with an added “meta-puzzle” element, check out  Matt Gaffney’s puzzle every week. Feel free to comment on the puzzle, but please don’t give too much away. Referring to entries by their locations is always a safe bet.

Update: Evan Birnholz has posted a contest over at his site, Devil Cross. Give it a shot! (Remember: Evan’s puzzles are LSFW than mine are. You’ve been warned!)

  1. Mr. Happy Pencil when you’ve gotten everything right.

Sounds like somebody enjoys solving puzzles even more than I do.

  2. buckeye bob says:

Is it just me, or is there a problem with the pdf file? It shows a blank page, with just header and footer when I Print Preview.

    • kdefg says:

probably not just you, and not just the PDF. The puz link usually goes directly to an auto-download for me, but this one just splatter all the answer letters on my browser window.

    • Neville says:

I’ve checked on a couple of computers in various browsers and I haven’t had this problem. Maybe someone else can touch base?

      • kdefg says:

ok, not the answers but it does try to display the contents as text instead of going to the download dialog. (It was gibberish but I quickly closed it in case of spoilers — now that i’ve solved it I’ll be trying to crack that like a code). I can right-click and save the file manually, no problem, it was just an odd behavior. Older puz links still work as expected.

      • buckeye bob says:

The pdf file is working OK today (Saturday)!

  5. Jeff G. says:

Brilliant meta as always! The full house pair was aces in my book.

  6. Scott H says:

I loved the full house pair as well, but am quite disturbed that I knew the answer immediately.

  7. Metapuzzled says:

I know the answer will be published tomorrow, but can someone (Jeff G, perhaps?) give some hint as to where to start looking for this meta answer? I haven’t been able to see anything beyond the finished grid, other than noticing the repeated reference to “giant” in the clues and that “A word…” could indicate the answer starts with “A” or involves words containing “A”.

    • Neville says:

Here’s a hint: Did you try finding out more information about the brewery in the puzzle? Seems that helped a lot of people with this one.

      • Metapuzzled says:

Thanks for the hint, but unfortunately, I’m still clueless. On the plus side, at least I filled in the grid correctly.
