Bonus Puzzle #2 – Themeless #21

As you may know, one of my favorite things is fanfare for its own sake. But even better is a proper reason to celebrate. And you know what? The crossword puzzle turns 100 years old this week! The exact date of the centennial is December 21, 2013. It’s also the first anniversary of the end of the world as predicted by the Mayans! (False.)

We’re going to celebrate all week long with some bonus puzzles, leading up to a puzzle inspired by the original on Friday. And to go along with today’s puzzle, here’s a CBS Sunday Morning piece on 100 years of cruciverbalism. Featured in the story are, among others, reigning ACPT champ (and friend of the blog) Dan Feyer and New York Times crossword editor Will Shortz. Keep your eyes peeled; can you spot something in the video that, though fine in early days of crosswording, doesn’t pass muster today? Let me know in the comments! And don’t forget to come back each day this week for more bonus puzzles and more on the 100th anniversary of the crossword.

Neville, I think we might have similar grids this week (for your Friday puzzle at least… my puzzle is coming out Saturday). I’m looking forward to solving it (and all your bonus puzzles this week)!
