Puzzle #65 – No Holds, Bard (and it’s a contest!)

In this meta-puzzle, you’re looking for something that’s meant to discourage holding.

Happy October, everyone! Keeping with the tradition of the contest puzzle last Halloween (and back by popular demand) we’ve got another contest this weekend! You’ve seen me promoting Matt Jones’s upcoming collection of themeless crosswords, right? No? Well here’s a link to his “No Holds Barred” Kickstarter project. Check it out! Here’s your chance to win a copy! (And for good measure, I’ll throw a copy of my own puzzlefest into the kitty, too.)

Edit: The contest is now closed. Thanks for entering! The solution is now unlocked.

  1. First, solve this week’s crossword puzzle. (To keep you honest, I’m locking the Across Lite file, so it’s not going to tell you if you’re making mistakes or give you Mr. Happy Pencil when you’ve gotten everything right. Plus, the solution grid isn’t up yet, either. Fair warning!)
  2. Figure out the answer to the meta-puzzle (note the prompt in italics above) and email it to neville.fogarty@gmail.com. Please put your solution in the subject line of the email. You have until 6 AM ET on Thursday, October 17, 2013 (just before the Hunter’s Moon!) to submit your answer – and please: only one guess per person. If you’ve got the right answer, you’ll receive one entry in the random drawing to win.
  3. Keep your fingers crossed!

That’s it! Remember that all correct answers submitted before the deadline are treated equally, so you don’t have to solve quickly. If your name is selected, I’ll send you an email on Thursday asking you for some details, so keep an eye out for that. I’ll announce the winner next Friday along with this puzzle’s solution and a new puzzle. And if you’re craving more contest crosswords with an added “meta-puzzle” element, check out  Matt Gaffney’s puzzle every week. Feel free to comment on the puzzle, but please don’t give too much away. Referring to entries by their locations is always a safe bet.

Reblogged this on Paws 4 Puzzles and commented:
Neville Fogarty is running a cool puzzle contest.

  4. Jeff G. says:

If there are less than 50 correct entries by noon on Wed. do we get a hint? ala MMMM ;-)

  5. Bryce Herdt says:

I give up. Why those five letters? (I had the entire grid solved. I’m really annoyed that there are steps yet eluding me.)

  6. Bob Kerfuffle says:

I actually entertained the word “thorn”, but didn’t send in an answer because I couldn’t connect it to every theme entry. OK, HICKORY trees may have thorns, and the LION in the fable had a thorn in his paw, and THERMAL may begin with TH, a thorn in the Runic alphabet? But ALERTEST and ACIDULOUS? Where’s the connection?

  7. Bob Kerfuffle says:

Oops, sorry! I had this page bookmarked and entered my comment above before looking at today’s (10/18) blog. And obviously, I never would have solved this one!

  8. Pamela says:

When and where is the winner announced (feeling smug since I figured it out)

  9. Neville says:

You can read a detailed solution to this puzzle and find out who won by looking at today’s post (which includes a new puzzle).
