Puzzle #60 – Vwllss #1

If you’re unfamiliar with vowelless crosswords, please strongly consider reading today’s post before solving the puzzle.

So we’re trying something exciting and new today: a vowelless crossword! What is a vowelless crossword, you ask? Well it’s fairly simple. Instead of writing out the complete answers for the clues, you only write the consonants in the grid. For example, if the clue reads [Classic video game in which players try to reach flag poles], you’d fill in the squares with SPRMRBRS instead of SUPER MARIO BROS. And just to simplify things, none of the original answers to clues in this grid contain the letter Y, so you needn’t worry about deciding whether to omit it or not.

And remember! Answers can start with vowels and may be two or more words! There’s a steep learning curve here, but that’s no reason to give up! When you’re finished, you can check out the expanded answers here in case there’s an entry or two that you don’t recognize or can’t seem to connect without the vowels.

One last note: Thanks, Rex, for the plug last week. New solvers, feel free to stop in anytime you like and say hello in the comments or engage me in some of the social media nonsense you’ll find on the sidebar. Old solvers, you’re still awesome.

Sweet, vwllsss are a fave of mine. Center and bottom were very tough (dnf for me, since I had never heard of either of the bottom two answers in the stack and fell into a few traps early on), the rest was challenging but very solvable. All in all very nice; tons of zip. More!

    Outstanding work! Fully LNGSQ (Longoesque).

Challenging is a correct category! Well, for me, anyway! My first Vwllss crossword and I did not fare well. On my first pass, I had just 10 answers. I Googled 6 answers. And I still had 3 wrong letters! But all in all, I thought it was a good challenge. Good job, Neville!

Oh, I forgot. BGRDMCHN. Excellent timing! The Cincinnati Reds unveiled a statue of Joe Morgan outside the stadium Saturday. The Great Eight, also known as the Big Red Machine, attended festivities on and off the field Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday. MLB Commissioner Bud Selig even granted a dispensation to Pete Rose to appear with his teammates, but with no media interviews. Go Reds!

My first shot at a vowelless, definitely a challenge (in a good way). Good brain exercise to look at words in a totally different way. Thanks for providing the spelled out answers – needed that on a few. Looking forward to the next one.
