Puzzle #89 – Cryptic #3 (and an announcement)

Time for another cryptic crossword. If you’re not familiar with cryptics, check out this guide to get yourself started. And if you’ve not solved one of my cryptics before, be on the lookout for plenty of anagrams as well as longer than normal and awkwardly phrased clues. I’m still working on writing super-smooth cryptics. Thanks for your patience.

Do you know someone who enjoys both crosswords and beverages of the hot variety? I bet you do. Here’s a gift idea: a mug with a crossword grid on it! Each month, they’re releasing a new set of clues that lines up with the mug’s grid at crosswordmug.com. It’s not up just yet, but I wrote the upcoming puzzle for April. No foolin’!

Announcement: My puzzles are going on a little hiatus, effective immediately. If you’d like to be updated when new puzzles return, click the “subscribe via email” button in the sidebar on the right. Alternatively, you can follow me on Facebook for a note when crosswords are back. (No other fluff from me, I promise!) It’ll be at least a few weeks before we’re back. In the mean time, I’m leaving all of the puzzles up here (including the bonus and guest puzzles), so feel free to browse the archives. And if that’s not enough for you, check out the list of indie puzzles in the sidebar. There’s some good stuff in there.

Peace, love & crosswords,
Neville

I do want to continue to subscribe. However, it says click on the sidebar on the right, but there is one. That might be because Comcast loads up the screen with so many ads that sometimes the important stuff isn’t visible.

Mary, I wish I knew what to tell you. Try scrolling right? I have never heard of this. I can’t imagine why Comcast would be showing ads on this site. (Well, they are Comcast.)

Great cryptic. The non-wordplay clue for 26a is very clever and made me laugh, especially when I thought I knew the answer from the enumeration. The answer for 1d is also very fresh.

Fridays won’t be the same, but I totally understand the need for a little hiatus every now and then. As for the puzzle, cryptics terrify me but I’ll take a stab at it.

Thanks for 89 weeks of great puzzles! Rest up, recharge, and we’ll be looking forward to your return. Thanks!

  5. Bencoe says:

Well done! Nicely made cryptic. I’ve been doing the London Times cryptics but this was much more fun.
